Social Media is Ultimately Good for Society

Cal Newport, an associate professor at the Georgetown University argues that people should quit social media. This claim is backed by the fact that he is a well known author, professor and blogger but has no social media accounts. His claim is that nobody needs social media and it is more of a time waster than anything. I disagree with that claim.

Social media obviously has some downsides, but overall social media is so widespread, YouTube for people that make videos, Twitter for people that want to express their opinion online, Facebook for people that want to keep in touch with relatives or friends, LinkedIn for professional businesses and people with professional profiles. All these companies and platforms make it easier than ever to get and stay in touch, from your personal relations to finding a job or hiring someone.

These companies and platforms also have great other things, YouTube doubles as an online streaming service, Facebook has their own local buy-and-sell platform called marketplace, Snapchat has their own news feed on the app... many of these companies have several different tools on their app that draw in more customers and users. These tools can come in very handy.

Social media has helped billions stay in touch as well as thousands of companies get a better base of customers. Specifically social media helps expand companies with targeted ads and it helps the users by offering free tools on sign up. For example, when you sign up for Google you get unlimited access to Google Drive, Noodle Tools, Google+, YouTube, Blogger, Google Maps, Google Sites, YouTube and more just from signing up for a free account. This helps people transfer data quicker across the internet, quicker to people than ever before.

Social media is also helping people become very rich very fast. Whether it's a YouTube star making millions or a famous Instagram model making hundreds of thousands. This has opened up more possibilities for people across the globe. Social media has ultimately made the world more accessible to everyone. Seconds after a major news event occurs you will know about it. News companies and private individuals can live-stream major news events and reach people on the other side of the world.

  1. Your understanding of some of the benefits of social media is good. Some further discussion of his concerns would show some balance and credibility. You can't really deny that social media and technology has become a huge time-waster for people can you? This doesn't mean it can't be beneficial too, but do the problems outweigh the benefits, or vice versa?

    1. I am aware social media is a huge time waster. The way I see it, the "problems outweigh the benefits" or vice versa has yet to be seen. We spend significantly more time on social media than we did several years ago, if this trend continues I think that the problems will outweigh the benefits, and could be a huge problem.
