China Bans Foreign Technology
China is a country that is plagued with speculation from government officials. It's no secret that the Chinese government want their entire population to be kept in the dark on certain issues. This has led them to ban several "Western" news outlets and technology. Ideally the Chinese government doesn't want anything that is not Chinese in their country, news, technology, ISP's and everything where the general public could find out things about China that the government doesn't want them to know.

China has banned sites such as Facebook, The Intercept, YouTube, All Google Services, Twitter, Dropbox, Foursquare and Flickr (BBC). There are also several news sites, such as CNN, that are allowed, but with a catch. The CNN broadcasting for China comes from a satellite, that is owned by the Chinese government. This means the news segments are altered or cut out by Chinese officials depending on if it meets their guidelines or not. This is the same with all American and European news sites, they are sifted through and edited before the Chinese public can view them.
Recently, China has announced that they are going to be replacing all the foreign technology with hardware from their own country. There are several very large Chinese companies that are closely tied with the Chinese Government. These companies are heavily restricted and watched, as they can be because of their headquarters being in the Chinese mainland. These companies also profit largely because the Chinese public has no other choices for TV, social media, books, computer software and hardware, news and every other aspect of life. China has made a motion to phase out all technology that isn't Chinese, this includes companies such as HP, Dell, Microsoft and Oracle. China will be switching to Chinese based tech companies that they can control such as Lenovo, Huawei, Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu.
This move hurts the people of China and deprives them of information. This also deal a huge blow to tech companies in America that import to China.

Your final paragraphs suggests some really important ideas about the impact of these decisions. It would be interesting to hear more about this. Also, is the US government doing anything about this? Can they?
ReplyDeleteThe United States is quite powerless here, because China is a foreign country the US has no authority to demand they buy our goods, we can put tariffs on them and tax their goods but we have no power other than soft power.
